Built on the hillside at Pillory Hill, Midways Cottage is very conveniently placed for the River Yealm creek and the local pub (The Swan), and only 100metres from the waterside. Passing The Swan at the bottom of the hill, it is a short walk to the village centre where there is a free car park, bus stop (to Plymouth), children’s play area and tennis courts.
Coastal walks can begin from the car park, around the woods or to Cellars Beach (3 miles). Alternatively, walking past The Ship (another excellent pub and well renowned locally for excellent food) will take you to the beginning of a four mile circular walk with breathtaking views of both the River Yealm and the sea.
During the summer, you can access the village of Newton Ferrers on the other side of the river by ferry (runs May to September) - alternatively, you can walk across the voss at low tide. It is well served with a chemist, post office/general store, small supermarket and butchers. There is also another pub (The Dolphin) again serving good food and a unique tea-room that is well worth a visit.
